— On a trailer at 18th and Columbia for the Reese Witherspoon/Owen Wilson movie
Welcome to your mid-20s.
My roommate, Kelly Kapoor, just turned 24 and received a birthday shock from Facebook. Her news feed reported that her serious college boyfriend is getting married, to the girl he met a few weeks after the last time they saw each other and he moved to the West Coast. She proceeded to call everyone she knew to lament the news.
KK: Finally! It took ten people before someone told me the thing I really wanted to hear.
DCS: What?
KK: I’m prettier than her! I knew it!
DCS: Oh, did I not do a good enough job of declaring your superiority? I assumed you knew you were better than her.
KK: No, not “better.” Prettier. That’s all I care about, being prettier than her!
(Ten minutes later, watching commercials.)
KK: Look! We can get “He’s Just Not That into You!”
Consumed: Say What? -- NYT Magazine
Nicholas Carr, who is at work on a book, tentatively titled “The Shallows,” about the culture of instant information, points out that blogs evolved from something to be updated on occasion to being updated daily, then many times a day; now social media services invite updates hourly, or constantly. “There’s a subtle, or not so subtle, form of competition,” he says. “You’re getting this constant stream of updates of whatever everyone else is doing; it kind of creates pressure that if you want to be in the flow, you also have to contribute. Frequently.”

Spotted: FLOTUS at Good Stuff
Michelle Obama took her staff to Good Stuff for lunch today. We walked by just as she was leaving, so I didn’t get a look at her, but I did see a ton of her staff hopping into a secret service van. I tried to post this from my phone when it happened two hours ago, but it failed.
The funny part was, I didn’t even notice anything unusual about the crowd in front of the restaurant, because it’s always like that.
Slate’s wine column includes a handy pocket-guide to their favorite wine importers. Love it.

Loved this last night. I became a HIMYM fan the first time I watched three in a row once. And now I’m hooked. It’s awesome. It makes me laugh and feel good about everything. It’s better than nitrous in that respect - it’s hard to watch more episodes when you’re passed out and someone’s drilling your teeth.
This is so genius.
Just got around to watching this week’s episode. Whoops. So good, though. One day I hope to marry someone who would make graphs like these. Until then … damn you, Lily!
Obama, at it again

- BG: i saw that. very exciting.
- except now it's going to be crowded and that makes me sad
- me: yeah, Obama is ruining your life. First Ben's, now this
- BG: i know
- obama needs to give me some space

The NYT’s ArtsBeat blog: “Dom DeLuise, the irrepressibly rotund comedian, has died at the age of 75 …”
God, I hope no one describes me as “irrepressibly rotund” when I die.
